I've (by accident) gotten into a habit of manually running it to match what I feel like.  Sometimes - often when I'm doing work - I do what you say and make my screen darker but not redder as the sun sets.  But sometimes I also make the screen redder as the sun sets.  I think the blueness at night is like a weak version of caffeine. Personally, I don't want to be extra awake during every waking hour.
