The biggest problem with refined sugar is that it provides no nutrition other than \"empty calories\". If you eat a generally healthy and varied diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, a little refined sugar won't hurt (as long as your total calorie intake is reasonable).

But the typical American diet has a lot of processed food with lots of refined sugar. So people are getting lots of their calories from things like sodas and cake/cookies/candy. In addition, they are getting a lot of bad fat. This is a big problem and is contributing to the obesity and diabetic epidemics.

This is not just a matter of uneducated comsumers, the entire US agricultural subsidies have the impact of making corn and soy based foods (and the amimals that are fed them) much cheaper than they would normally be. This makes buying processed food much cheaper (and more profitable for the manufacturer) than buying fruits and vegetables.
