I don't know anyone who *hasn't* attempted \"the most straightforward method\". When I read that they looked at Jared like an \"obsessive alien\" for journalling, I thought perhaps that was because when they journal they end up feeling like an obsessive alien themselves. It's not that they didn't try -- it's that this is a thing they've tried and that is precisely how it made them feel which is why they stopped it. Different strokes for different folks. I'm a fan of journalling everything myself (from work to stretching), I just have never had the opportunity to recommend it to a friend as they've all tried it before for weight loss and are negative about it.

If you haven't had success just cutting calories across the board or with portion control, it makes sense to then try experimenting with different food groups to see if maybe it's any easier. It's actually quite rational, even if not particularly effective. You constantly hear things in the media, right? For example, it takes up to 30% of the calories in protein to actually digest the protein, while that number is 3% for fat. Judging by that, going low-fat, high-protein seems equivalent to Jared's \"reduce calories by 20%\" thing, using the same calories in - calories out logic -- it's just that calories in - calories out is actually not being captured in journalling in that case (or are you putting in extra effort to adjust for that? What about fibre having 2 kcal per gram rather than 4 kcal but often being counted as having 4?). On the flip side, satiety is much higher with fats and protein, so people also have the incentive to try going low-carb.

The point is not that these things work or that calories in and calories out do not drive fundamentals. But I can see why people would avoid calorie counting. You've tried cutting back, you've failed, you put close to 0% probability on being successful with that alone, and journalling makes you feel like an obsessive alien. I just don't know a single person who hasn't tried counting calories. Maybe they're just keeping it to themselves out of embarrassment. Else sounds like we just know different people.", "timestamp": "1475248794"}, {"author": "Jared", "source_link": "https://www.facebook.com/jefftk/posts/815036263672?comment_id=815054871382&reply_comment_id=815201447642", "anchor": "fb-815054871382_815201447642", "service": "fb", "text": "→ On some level, I know I'm weird. That tendency in me is, for whatever reason, unusual to the point that particularly Feeling-based (in the Myers Briggs sense) people see my perspective as somewhat warped. As long as I get the results I want, I'll deal. :)

As far as the protein/fat/carb thing, that's definitely not something to ignore -- but it is, as you said, driven by the fundamentals. 'Journalling' is just a tool to get at the true goal: Budgeting. Just like financially healthy people live on a money budget, healthy eaters live on a dietary budget. I've lived for some months now with a 1500 kcal daily budget. If I look at a particularly tasty donut, full of fat, I'll eat it knowing that's 400 calories out of my budget. I'll pass up a slice of garlic bread knowing that its 250 kcals of carbs won't be as filling as the same 250 kcals found in the protein-rich but sugary yogurt I can eat later. Its contents and the taste are not worth the hit to my budget, whereas the donut was.

It's to the point, now, after so many years of checking the sides of boxes and asking for the special calorie menu at McDonald's, that I can eyeball most foods and know, to within 100 kcals, how much I'm eating. It doesn't have to be overwhelmingly precise. I just keep a running tally in my head.
