Set up a chess board and a pylon (a post, a tree, a shoe, or whatever) at some distance from each other, perhaps 40m for this example, creating an 80m circuit from the board, around the pylon, and back to the board. White starts the game at the board, while black starts at the pylon.
Upon making her first move, white signals verbally, and the chase begins. Black races towards the board, and white races towards the pylon. From this point on, whenever a player arrives at the board, his prerogative is to move as quickly as possible. Having moved, she will race the circuit as quickly as possible. Should a player arrive at the board before the other has moved or overtake him mid-circuit, the latter loses his turn.
Those are the basics; a few other details exist to facilitate otherwise normal chess play. If necessary, handicapping is accomplished by giving the two players different circuit lengths; different pylons may be used by each player or a second pylon may be added which is part of one player's circuit but not the other's.
A simpler variation from the perspective of making rules to eliminate perverse incentives is to play that overtaking your opponent or catching them at the board causes you to win the match outright. This variation works well with much longer circuits, 200m or more.
The game combines brute athleticism with logical challenge, forcing players to confront the intellectualism of chess while suffering from oxygen deprivation. Building on this dynamic, other creative challenges may be layered, such as using a small board to make it easier to confuse pieces (bishops and pawns, kings and queens) which happens more and more as player fatigue increases.
It's devilishly fun, but I rarely find someone who is as excited about it as I am. I plug Drill Chess whenever I can, and I may even have plugged it on Jeff's wall before.
