There are at least four simple issues that can create audible differences: impedance mismatch (passive), over-saturation(passive), overdriving(active), and ground loops (active). It's true that modern preamps are generally far less likely to have/produce impedance mismatch issues, but I was talking about saturation issues, which are an unchanged result of the physics of transformers in passive DIs. The DI boxes available to me when I first encountered the problem didn't have pads.  I don't recall if I later tried with DI boxes that did have pads (this problem took place annually over the course of 10 years, and as I had a work-around, was low-priority)<br><br>The device that *really* fixed the problem is a ROLLS Promatch stereo level shifter.  <br><br>I had ascribed this to an impedance mismatch, but now you've got me wondering.
