It's probably reasonable to value equity according to the valuation of the company, because that's the market's best guess as to what the company is worth. Some caveats:
(1) VC is not as efficient a market as the stock market, so company valuations can stray further from \"true\" value.
(2) VCs expect higher returns from their investments than from stocks, so you would probably do worse in expectation by investing your money in stocks or other public assets.
(3) VCs probably have preferred stock and you have common stock, which gives them some advantages that could be relevant (e.g., if the company is liquidated at below its current valuation, preferred shareholders get paid before common shareholders).
