Curious: why did it turn out that time together didn't turn out to be an issue with the shifted schedules solution? I have a colleague who tried this same thing with her family, but found that she and her husband basically never saw each other and they had very little time together as a family, and very little flexibility for accomplishing errands without the baby. Fortunately, she had a 1 year sabbatical that began right as her 3 month maternity leave ended so we didn't need to start daycare until our baby was 15 months, which helped a lot.
