What I think is just as important, but difficult to quantify, is how the likelihood that one is to overpurchase (for lack of a better word) in store vs online impacts the overall savings. My experience is solely anecdotal: I switched to amazon fresh and over the last 3 months have monitored my spending on groceries, restaurant, bars, takeout, etc (compared to historical spend) and what I’ve found is that while everything else has remained constant, grocery bills are 70-80% of historical spend. I’ve also not purchased the stuff that brick and mortar stores sell in locations like end caps to boost sales. So overall I’m saving. I have found Peapod to be sharply higher than in-store Stop & Shop prices... not just a small premium (milk gallons are $3.79/gal on Peapod vs $1.99 to $2.59 at in-store Stop & Shop; store brand deli meat is typically a $1/lb premium on Peapod); plus bonus gas point deals that Stop & Shop runs are only good in-store which can cause a huge effective price disparity as I book gas point savings as a reduction in my grocery bill, unless you have no use for them.
