Because I don't believe that farmers are more deserving of my help just because they happen to be near me I don't have the same motivations as you. This is nice because you have a much more complete view of your local situation and you can see the magnitude of the problem. In practice, as someone living in one of the richest countries, this doesn't work. I want there to be multiple charities because I believe more good is done that way. I want and expect people in the aggregate to donate to multiple charities because that's the way to support those charities, and because different people will adjudge different charities the most important. Given that, I see no advantage in having you give all your money to Charity A and me give all my money to Charity B vs. each of us supporting both. The advantage of splitting our support is that each charity can then claim twice the number of supporters, which is useful for soliciting donations from people who have not reached their maximum for charitable giving and for gaining clout in the policy arena.

(2) It would really depend on the details. The simple case of giving money to a charity so they can subsidize someone else purchasing organic food seems far less efficient than my purchasing it myself. Perhaps there's a more effective way to promote organic farming practices than purchasing choices, but I'd have to be convinced (since I've seen the purchasing choices having a strongly positive effect in recent years).", "timestamp": "1279113985"}]}
